Kate Mara Reveals She Dumped a Boyfriend After He Accidentally Kicked the Lombardi Trophy

Despite her family’s heavy involvement in the NFL — her father’s side owns the New York Giants while her mother’s family owns the Pittsburgh Steelers — Kate Mara‘s British ex-boyfriend is the one who left his permanent mark on American football.

The 33-year-old actress appeared on Conan O’Brien‘s show Tuesday night and shared a story that will make any football fan cringe. Soon after the New York Giants won the Super Bowl, her ex-boyfriend came over to her parents’ house and got to hold the Vince Lombardi trophy.

“He was a very enthusiastic man and he put on the gloves and then he went to lift up the trophy, but he lifted it up from the base, which we didn’t know wasn’t connected to the trophy, and it fell,” Mara explained. “He was wearing these steel-toed boots, he was a pretty good soccer player and he kicked his foot up and caught the trophy with his boot and then caught it in his hands.”

“And he dented, just a tiny part,” she said.

Mara recalled her father solemnly shaking his head after the incident occurred.

Needless to say, the guy didn’t stick around much longer.

“And that was the end. We broke up, and that was it,” Mara said.

Luckily, Mara’s current boyfriend Jamie Bell, another Englishman, is very into the family’s football obsession.

“He surprised me one day when we first started dating. He spent a night where all he did was watch the previous season of the Giants, their every game,” she revealed. “And so the next time we watched a game together, he knew everything about it, which was amazing. He did his homework.”
