Just for Kicks: Check Out a New Martial Arts-Inspired Virtual Reality Experience Involving Cirque du Soleil
Virtual Reality is already one of the fastest-growing mediums in entertainment — and now it’s about to get even bigger.
Felix & Paul Studios is once again teaming up with Cirque du Soleil to launch a new virtual reality experience, KÀ The Battle Within.
The 3D experience immerses users in a virtual-reality adventure of heroism and martial arts. Throughout the 13-minute experience, two rival clans from an ancient and mythical world battle it out in a fight full of acrobatics and impressive combat.
KÀ The Battle Within, which was shot on the world’s largest moving hydraulic stage, has already been praised for pushing the boundaries of virtual reality at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was included as part of the official selection of the festival’s Cutting Edge POP VR lineup.
Co-founders Felix Lajeunesse and Paul Raphaël previously told PEOPLE that when creating different virtual reality worlds, they focus on the emotional connection users have to the narrative of the story — rather than a game-like experience.
“We’re trying to start from that place of more film-like immersion—experiences of presence that are more realistic,” Paul Raphaël told PEOPLE of the inspiration behind their creations. “[It’s] more about how you’d feel in the real world or in a dream than when you’re in a game when you have a defined rule set.”
Felix & Paul Studios and Cirque du Soleil previously collaborated on the highly praised Inside the Box of Kurios, which was released earlier this year and won the 2016 Daytime Emmy Award in the Outstanding Interactive Media.
KÀ The Battle Within is now available on Samsung’s GearVR for Galaxy Note 4, Note 5, S6, S6 Edge, S7 and S7 Edge.
