Johnny Depp is spending time with his children in Los Angeles after recently returning stateside.

The actor, who is in the midst of a contentious divorce from estranged wife Amber Heard, was spotted getting dinner at Ago Restaurant in West Hollywood with daughter Lily-Rose, 17, and son Jack, 14.

“They had a memorial for Johnny’s mom at the restaurant. Johnny rented the private dining room,” a restaurant source tells PEOPLE. Depp’s mother, Betty Sue Palmer, died on May 20.

“He took his mom to the restaurant many times for celebrations. Last night seemed to be a celebration of her life,” the source adds.

“The mood was light and guests seemed to enjoy. Johnny sat next to his kids. He looked very good. Tanned and healthy. Much healthier than a few months ago. He didn’t drink any alcohol.”

According to another source close to Depp, the actor’s “doing great” and “looks and seems healthy” since retreating to his island in the Bahamas, where he had been staying since completing the European half of his tour with the Hollywood Vampires. His private island “is always a great place for him,” the source adds, and “he always seems happy spending time there.”

Moving forward, the source says Depp “is looking forward to the [American] tour now. He hasn’t been speaking about his divorce. He just seems focused on hanging out with his kids before the tour.”

Last week, a source told PEOPLE that Lily-Rose recently visited her father on the island. “Having his kids around is always great for him. He has really missed his kids,” the source said.

Depp has kept a low profile since Heard leveled shocking domestic abuse allegations against him. The star gave his first public interview since the split last weekend on the Jones’s Jukebox radio talk show, but spoke only about touring with his band.

The group is set to kick off their U.S. tour Friday in Pennsylvania, and Depp is expected to take the stage with his bandmates as scheduled.

On Aug. 15 and 16, a Los Angeles court is due to address Heard’s request for a permanent restraining order against Depp. A temporary restraining order was reissued to Heard in the interim.

In a response to Heard’s allegations, Depp’s lawyers claimed in court documents that the actress was “attempting to secure a premature financial resolution by alleging abuse.”

Meanwhile, Heard has been seen out several times in Los Angeles amid the divorce proceedings.
