What they’ve done to Johnny Depp is criminal!

That’s fitting, though, as a makeup team has turned the heartthrob actor into grim-faced Boston mobster Whitey Bulger – complete with slicked-back, graying hair – for an upcoming biopic.

Depp, 50, is expected to film the movie, Black Mass, over the next eight weeks in Boston, where Bulger was a feared organized-crime figure for decades before becoming an FBI informant and later going into hiding for 16 years.

Bulger, now 84, was found and arrested in the summer of 2011 in Santa Monica, California, where he and his girlfriend had been living. This past November, he was sentenced to life in prison for murder, extortion and other crimes.

Many storefronts in South Boston are being transformed for the movie to look as they did in the ’70s and ’80s. The film’s cast also includes The Great Gatsby‘s Joel Edgerton as well as Dakota Johnson, who is on a hot streak following her turn in the upcoming film version of Fifty Shades of Grey.
