Johnny Depp joined wife Amber Heard on the red carpet for the premiere of her latest film, The Danish Girl
“We connect on a lot of levels, but the first things that really got me was she’s an aficionado of the blues,” Depp told E! News at the Los Angeles premiere of her latest film, The Danish Girl. “I would play a song, some old obscure blues song, and she knew what it was.”
Depp, 52, and Heard, 29, were married in February after first meeting on the set of 2011’s The Rum Diary. At first private about their romance, the couple have recently begun to open up more about life together.
“She’s very, very literate,” Depp said of Heard at the premiere. “She’s a voracious reader as I have been so we connected on that level as well. And she’s kind of brilliant.”
“I’m a lucky man,” he added with a smile.
Depp also said that he’s “very proud” of Heard’s work in the upcoming drama, which he called “very beautiful.”
“She worked very hard,” he said.
The film tells the story of artist Lili Elbe’s (formerly Einar Wegener) preparations to undergo one of the first gender reassignment surgeries. Heard portrays Oola Paulson, a friend of Elbe and wife Gerda Wegener.
“It looks like where she belongs,” Depp said of the 1920s-era film. “I always felt like I was supposed to be in a different time, you know, and I kind of felt that way about her the first time I saw her. So it looks right and it looks perfect to me.”
