John Krasinski is well aware that he married someone out of his league, so there’s no need to remind him.
The actor stopped by The Tonight Show on Tuesday where he recalled a London customs agent’s disbelief when Krasinski, 38, told him he was married to British actress Emily Blunt.
“I married up, and don’t I know it,” Krasinski said when the audience erupted into applause at the mention of Blunt’s name. “They don’t have to tell me; the customs agent in London did.”
Kransinki said he had a less than pleasant experience dealing with a customs agent while visiting Blunt on the set of Mary Poppins earlier this year.
“It was going great, the customs, the whole experience. And then I hit this guy who was about my age,” Krasinski recalled. “He looked like he was ready to get a little surly with me.”
The Office alum said the agent wasn’t impressed by his work history.
“He said, ‘It says here that you’re an actor. Would I know you from anything?’ And I went, ‘You know, we redid the U.K. version of The Office,'” he shared. “Strike one! He was like, ‘Oh, you took what we did, perfect.'”
But it was when Krasinski revealed he was married to Blunt that things really took a turn for the worse.
“And then he says, ‘Who are you visiting here?’ And I was like, ‘My wife,'” said the star. “He says, ‘Oh, is she an actress? Would I know her?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know man, her name’s Emily Blunt.’ And he goes like this, ‘You? You married Emily Blunt? Go. Just go.'”
Krasinski and Blunt star alongside each other in the upcoming thriller A Quiet Place, which hits theaters April 6.
The actor recently opened up to PEOPLE about working with his wife for the first time.
“We could be announcing our divorce right now if it did go the wrong way,” he joked.
In the horror film, Krasinski, 38, and Blunt, 35, star as a husband and wife desperately trying to protect their children. In real-life, the two have been married for eight years and are parents to daughters Hazel, 4, and Violet, 22 months.
“I’ve never have loved my wife more than after we did this movie,” he said. “For me, it was a trust thing. We trust each other in day-to-day life for sure, but when you trust each other in this way it’s different.”
