Entertainment Movies Inside Jim Carrey's Turmoil: 'He Keeps Questioning If He Could Have Prevented' Girlfriend's Suicide Jim Carrey is still "in shock and very upset" over Cathriona White's suicide, a source says By Mike Miller Published on October 8, 2015 01:00 PM Share Tweet Pin Email Photo: Amanda Edwards/WireImage Jim Carrey’s girlfriend’s suspected suicide has left the actor devastated and wondering what, if anything, he could have done to prevent it. “No one from her family is putting any blame on Jim,” a source close to Carrey tells PEOPLE in the magazine’s new issue. But Carrey “keeps questioning if he could have prevented it. Jim has been at home surrounded by people 24/7.” Cathriona White and Carrey, who dated on and off for three years, were last seen enjoying dinner together on Sept. 19 at one of their favorite sushi restaurants in Malibu. “She was very bubbly, and they seemed to have a good time together,” says a witness. “They seemed happy.” Just over a week later White was found dead in her Sherman Oaks, California, home of an apparent suicide. Painkillers, sleeping aids and other pills were found at her bedside, along with several notes, one of which was addressed to Carrey. “Jim has been in shock and very upset,” the source close to the actor says. He helped pay for White’s sister and stepmother to travel to L.A. Carrey, who has talked about his struggles with depression, has weathered turbulence in his relationships over the years. “He likes being in a relationship but also likes to be alone with himself,” a source close to his ex-girlfriend Jenny McCarthy tells PEOPLE in the new issue. “He is charming and loving one day, then totally off on a soul-searching trek the next.” Carrey and White, who worked as a makeup artist, met on a film set in 2012, but their relationship was on and off. They had recently “decided to take a breather,” says a source, but they had not split and were still in contact. “Ultimately Carrey didn’t feel it was healthy,” says the source close to him. “He kept breaking up with her so she could find something better. He really cared about her and thought that she would be happier without him.” White’s death came as a shock to all who knew her. Says a source in her Irish hometown, Cappawhite: “Her family were hoping she might come home for Christmas.” White’s funeral is set to take place Saturday at her hometown of Cappawhite, in Tipperary, Ireland. • Reporting by MIA McNIECE, PERNILLA CEDENHEIM, GABRIELLE OLYA, NICOLE SANDS and LINDA MARX For much more about Cathriona White’s death and how Jim Carrey is coping, pick up the new issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday
