You know the iconic dance lift that Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze pulled off in Dirty Dancing? The actress better known as Baby in the 1987 classic has now revealed how she prepared for the scene – and the answer might surprise you.

“I only did it on the day I shot it,” Grey, 55, admits to The Guardian in an interview to promote her new comedy Red Oaks. “Never rehearsed it, never done it since. I don’t know how all these people who reenact it have the guts to throw themselves into the arms of anyone other than Patrick Swayze. It’s insane!”

Though the dance move has been redone thousands of times – even Channing Tatum and his dog have gotten in on the action – the onetime Dancing with the Stars winner says that move is officially retired from her repertoire.

“It happened, enjoy it, watch it over and over again but never ask me to do it again because I’m too f—— old,” Grey says. “I have a family and I want to live longer.”

Though she won’t be reenacting the famous move anytime soon, Grey admits that she is thrilled to be returning to the small screen in Red Oaks. The show, which is set in 1985, allows her to relive another notable aspect of the ’80s: the clothes.

“It was a very different time, not just because of the insane costumes. I mean, wardrobe!,” she says. “Although is it is ‘costumey’ when you look at it – the shiny spandex we wore in public, the shoulder pads and the hair – we thought we looked fantastic.”
