When Jennifer Garner first heard she was going to be on the cover of PEOPLE’s 2019 Beautiful Issue, she “kind of just said, ‘Wait, I’m sorry, what? Really?'”

As the gorgeous star, 47, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue, “I was very surprised, and it took me a minute honestly to accept it.”

While she can hold on her own on a red carpet, Garner insists she is much more comfortable in her “uniform” of jeans, a sweater and sneakers.

“Every time I’m leaving town, I take all the clothes I never wear because you look through your closet and you think, ‘I love this. Why don’t I wear this? It’s such a pretty dress,'” she says. “But in reality, when I get there, I look for jeans and my sneakers. And I don’t know why I try to pretend like I’m suddenly going to be Dress Girl, because I’m not unless I’m put in it.”

The actress is also low-maintenance when it comes to her hairstyle. “I work out pretty hard so I almost wash it every day,” says Garner. “But I don’t like blow it out. I walk around with wet hair. But I just feel like, ‘I’ve showered! Don’t I get a gold star? What more do you want from me?'”

Garner, who is a fan of Body By Simone, has also started boxing “which I love,” she adds. “I try to work out every day but like any mom, you’re juggling and you take it day by day. I do see it as part of the job.”

Despite her workout regimen, “I don’t always stay at the same weight,” adds the actress, who usually starts her day by drinking one of nutritionst Kelly LeVeque‘s Fab 4 smoothies. “I like food so if I need to knock a few pounds off I guess I could. I know how to do it, I just don’t want to!”
