The Scottish actor is currently sporting a bald head to reprise the role of Charles “Professor X” Xavier in Dark Phoenix, his fourth X-Men film alongside Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence, and he recently revealed to PEOPLE why he doesn’t love the look. “I used to like the fact that it afforded me a certain amount of anonymity but it no longer does that,” says McAvoy. “Since I did two movies that everybody saw where I had a bald head, now it’s like a f—— beacon. But what do I like about it? Not a lot at the moment. I like when it’s been about five or seven days going in, then it’s cool but when it’s properly skinhead I look a bit weird. I do like the fact that I don’t have to do anything in the morning.” Coincidentally, McAvoy’s preferred version of the closely-cropped ‘do is currently on display in his new film Atomic Blonde. In the action-thriller, McAvoy plays a corrupt spy who ends up on the receiving end of a well-choreographed beat-down by Charlize Theron‘s badass character. Focus Features “I didn’t have a lot of fight scenes but I was pretty pleased with myself for figuring out how to keep a cigarette in my mouth while I was getting my ass kicked by Charlize Theron,” McAvoy reveals. “And by the way I actually did, there was no camera trickery, I actually kept it in my mouth the whole time.” For much more on James McAvoy and his role in Atomic Blonde, pick up the latest issue of PEOPLE on newsstands now. Although McAvoy is enjoying his very busy acting career, he relishes time at home when he can do normal things. “What do I enjoy most when I’m not working? Hard drinking and drugs!” he jokes. “No, like most good people, I enjoy the usual s—. Playing football [aka soccer in American-speak], reading, I like cooking. All these boring things I like to do when I’m not flying around the world crazy, just being safe at home.” Does he have a signature dish? “I do a nice Karai chicken, which is about 99.99 percent onion,” he says. “It’s like a Karai curry.” Atomic Blonde is now playing in theaters.
