Who wouldn’t want their daughter to date James Franco? Not Bryan Cranston – in their new movie, that is.

The two stars are facing off in the upcoming comedy Why Him?, which features a tattooed and often shirtless Franco dating Cranston’s daughter – and PEOPLE has the first look.

In the film, an over protective midwestern dad (Cranston) travels with his family to visit his daughter at Stanford, only to discover she’s dating a brash and socially-awkward tech billionaire (Franco) who, to make matters worse, is about to pop the question.

“I have a lot of tattoos and use crude language so I’m everything that Bryan Cranston’s character wouldn’t want in a son-in-law,” Franco, 38, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue.

Naturally, chaos and competition ensues between the men.

Despite playing rivals onscreen, the two actors couldn’t stop cracking each other up while filming.

“James Franco constantly just comes up and smashes you in the face with comedy,” says Cranston, 60. “Funny, funny stuff.”

“I love that the crudest one in the room is often Bryan,” adds Franco.

Why Him? hits theaters Dec. 25.
