Jake Gyllenhaal shows off some killer abs in the trailer for his new boxing drama, Southpaw, but it’s his performance as a washed-up pugilist struggling for redemption that could see him in the Oscar race next year.

The film, directed by Training Day‘s Antoine Fuqua, shows Gyllenhaal, 34, who plays Billy “The Great” Hope, spiraling downward after his wife (Rachel McAdams) is killed.

After he loses custody of his daughter and his home is repossessed, the only way is up. And that’s where Forest Whitaker comes in.

The film also stars 50 Cent and Rita Ora, and features a new song by Eminem, who released the trailer online on Friday, writing, “Sneak peek of some new stuff I’ve been working on in the Southpaw trailer. World premiere!”

Southpaw will be released July 31.
