When Jake Gyllenhaal‘s life starts to unravel in Demolition, an unlikely connection with Naomi Watts helps him put it back together.

In the film, a customer-service rep Karen (Watts) forms a strong bond with Davis (Gyllenhaal), an investment banker struggling after losing his wife in a tragic car accident. Admitting emotional burdens of her own, Karen helps Davis rebuild his life.

In this exclusive clip from the upcoming film, Gyllenhaal’s character explains that life isn’t always as perfect as it may seem from the outside.

“Your whole house is just lovely,” Watt’s character Karen says after showing up to Davis’ door soaking wet from the sprinkler system. “Aside from the appliances, it’s the kind of house people dream of living in.”

But instead of agreeing with Karen, he explains that the house is nothing more than a collection of material items.

“I hate this house,” he says. “It’s just shiny stuff.”

Demolition hits theaters April 8.
