Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Falchuk are engaged. And while the announcement came as a shock to fans, those who know them best say it’s no surprise the couple decided to take the plunge.

“They’ve been together for around 4 years, and she’s totally meshed him with her family life, so it’s not surprising,” a source tells PEOPLE. “They just are extremely compatible.”

Paltrow, 45, officially confirmed the happy news in the cover story for Goop Magazine‘s Sex & Love issue, saying she’s finally “found the man I was meant to be with.”

Although the actress first met the Glee co-creator, 46, when she guest-starred on the show back in 2010, the duo have been dating since August 2014 after Paltrow split from Coldplay frontman Chris Martin after 11 years of marriage.

“It’s always been obvious that Brad makes Gwyneth very happy. They have a very easy and natural relationship,” says a source close to Paltrow.

Adds another source, “In some ways Brad is the guy that is most like her dad, a TV writer, a smart guy who is self made… and she adored her dad.” Paltrow’s dad, Bruce, passed away in 2002.

The couple has figured out a way to make things work amid their hectic work schedules.

“Gwyneth loves her independence and Brad seems the same,” says the source. “They have their separate work lives and their life together. It really seems to work for them.”

Along with spending time together as a couple, they always make family time a priority — including with Martin. Paltrow shares daughter Apple, 13, and son Moses, 11, with Martin, 40. Falchuk has two children from a previous marriage, Brody and Isabella.

In November, the trio was seen grabbing brunch together.

“It all seems to work for them. Chris and Brad have hung out several times,” says the source close to Paltrow. “They are both often at Gwyneth’s for family fun and dinners. Everyone seems very mature about their family situation.”
