Melissa McCarthy‘s worked with some of the funniest people on the planet and almost always manages to keep a straight face.

Yet somehow, action star Jason Statham always seemed to have the actress in stitches on the set of their new film Spy.

“I broke [character] a lot with him,” McCarthy, 44, admits to PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly editorial director Jess Cagle. “Especially when he would get really close to my face and he’d get so intense.”

“I’m pretty good about not breaking because I know once I start I get really giggly and then I feel like the crew is like, ‘Are you laughing at your own bits?’ ”

In comedy, McCarthy says, “nothing is grosser” than laughing at your own jokes.

But the actress notes that Statham is an underrated straight man – something she says she first noticed from his performance in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

While the action star made his transition to comedy look easy, McCarthy jokes that she had a little difficulty entering his world of stunts and “crazy fighting.”

During one scene, McCarthy says she got a little nervous while dangling from a helicopter flying 40 to 50 feet in the air.

As she hung on for dear life, McCarthy says, “Jason Statham is literally crawling up my body like a ladder. I was like, ‘What am I doing and how did I get here?’ “
