Finding the perfect "mom-and-pop" store was no easy task

Finding the perfect hardware store for one of the most iconic scenes in Fifty Shades of Grey was no easy task.

“It’s really hard to find a mom-and-pop hardware store that’s not a chain,” production designer David Wasco says in the exclusive clip above from the home-video release of the erotic film.

“It sounds ridiculous,” adds executive producer Marcus Viscidi. “We probably went to 10 or 15 hardware stores.”

Eventually they landed on Ladner Village Hardware in Vancouver. Much like Christian’s (Jamie Dornan) initial attraction to Ana (Dakota Johnson), it was love at first sight for the film’s producers. “It was instantaneous,” Viscidi says.

And designers were able to take advantage of the store’s natural “recurring grids or grills” to foreshadow Christian’s penchant for BDSM.

“We tried to subliminally have, even starting at Clayton’s, where you’re looking through display fixtures that are grids and grills when she’s selling Christian the rope or when Ana is looking out the window at Taylor’s car,” says Wasco.

Fifty Shades of Grey is out on DVD and Blu-ray on Friday.
