Estate of Nina Simone Slams Zoë Saldana After Actress Quotes the Late Singer on Twitter
Following controversy of Saldana portraying the iconic singer, the estate of Nina Simone has called out the actress.
Nina Simone – or rather, her estate – has spoken.
While it’s unclear who runs it, the verified Twitter account for the late singer’s estate tweeted Zoe Saldana on Wednesday after the actress – who plays Simone in the movie Nina – quoted the legendary star.
“I’ll tell you what freedom is to me- No Fear I mean really, no fear,” Saldana, 37, tweeted.
Simone’s estate responded, “Cool story but please take Nina’s name out of you mouth. For the rest of your life.”
The estate followed that up with two more tweets, sharing a video of India Arie portraying Simone and writing that they hope people will “understand this is painful.”
Controversy around the biopic has swirled since Saldana shared the first official poster for the upcoming film. Upon seeing it, Twitter and Instagram lashed back at the mother of two – who is of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent – saying that her skin has been darkened and comparing the makeup to a form of blackface.
Although accusations were rampant, PEOPLE was informed that the studio did not doctor the image, as it was a still from the film.
Simone’s daughter Lisa Simone Kelly even criticized the casting choice in 2012 when Saldana was first attached to the role.
“My mother was raised at a time when she was told her nose was too wide, her skin was too dark. Appearance-wise this is not the best choice,” she said in an interview with the New York Times.
While Saldana did not respond to the direct jab from Simone’s estate on Twitter, she later took to Instagram posting an image of the well fought over movie poster, simply offering ” ” as a caption.
Nina hits theaters on April 22.
