Elle Fanning Portrays the Woman Who Created Frankenstein in Mary Shelley First Trailer
Elle Fanning is taking on the role of a literary legend in her upcoming film Mary Shelley
Elle Fanning is taking on the role of a literary legend in her upcoming film Mary Shelley — and PEOPLE has the exclusive first trailer.
The 20-year-old actress portrays author Mary Shelley in the film by the same name, which follows the young writer in the years before she creates the iconic monster, Frankenstein.
“I have a fire in my soul, and I will no longer allow you or anyone else to contain it,” Fanning says in the trailer.
The trailer shows a 16-year-old Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin falling in love with Percy Shelley, a married man who quickly sweeps her off her feet.

But as her love life takes a turn and her fascination with “reanimation” grows, she becomes inspired to write her first novel.
The writer eventually publishes Frankenstein under her married name — much to the disbelief of those around her. Shelley finds herself having to prove that the story is her own and not the work of her husband.
“It is my story and you dare question a woman’s ability to experience lust, betrayal, death,” Fanning as Shelley says, later adding, “My choices made me who I am and I regret nothing.”
Mary Shelley — also starring Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams and Douglas Booth — is set to hit theaters May 25.
