You’ve never seen newly minted Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne quite like this.

The 33-year-old actor is currently working on The Danish Girl, which follows the story of transgender pioneer Lili Elbe (played by Redmayne) who was one of the first recipients of sex reassignment surgery, almost a century ago.

And now, the production company behind the film has released the first photo of Redmayne in the role – in full makeup and curly red wig.

The film, which is currently in production, is being directed by Tom Hooper, whom Redmayne worked with in 2012’s Les Misérables.

The project is being adapted from David Ebershoff’s 2000 novel about Elbe (born Einar Mogens Wegener), who transitioned to female in the early 1930s.

Earlier versions of the project, which were floated around five years ago, suggested Nicole Kidman might be playing Elbe, with Gwyneth Paltrow playing wife Gerda. The role of Gerda is now being played by Swedish actress Alicia Vikander.
