Drew Barrymore hasn't had a "romantic partner" in almost four years, but she still has a lot of love in her life to be thankful for
Drew Barrymore may not be dating anyone at the moment, but that doesn’t mean her life isn’t filled with love.
In a heartfelt message to her followers on Thursday, the Santa Clarita Diet star, 43, revealed that even though she was single on Valentine’s Day (again), she wasn’t “sitting around bummed out.”
“I am not totally sure what Valentine’s Day is supposed to feel like. But when I walked in my trailer today at work and saw that my friend Joy had put this on my mirror, I knew,” Barrymore wrote, alongside a photo the sweet surprise.
In the image, Barrymore grinned while standing behind a powerful message her friend had stuck to a mirror in a series of heart-shaped Post-it notes, which read, “Hey D.B. You are f— amazing and a total babe (duh). Don’t doubt this for even a second today!”
Continuing, Barrymore explained that in its essence, Valentine’s Day is all about love in general — and not just the love you might have for a “romantic partner.”
“I know this… I love my friends. I love my children first of course, but this day is just about love period,” she wrote, in reference to her daughters Olive, 6, and Frankie, 4, whom she shares with ex-husband Will Kopelman.
The star went on to share that she’s been single “for almost four years.”
“If you don’t have it with a romantic partner (I’m single and have not been able to successfully date for almost four years so what do I know you ask?) I believe with all my heart in the human heart,” she wrote.
“There are just good days and bad days. Really difficult- test your will to live days. And days where you feel so alive your skin tingles and your smile might just rip your face apart until it floats right up into heaven and you want [to] skywrite about how goddamn happy you are!!!!!” she continued. “But the constant love usually has been my kids and my friends. A type of love that does not require a romantic partnership and navigation.”
In conclusion, Barrymore noted that although she’s not quite “ready for love,” she still has many blessings in her life.
“I have fought my way to a deeper happiness on my own, and i love being independent! It just rules. I am also lucky enough to have two young amazing kids and a full time job, and rad friends. So I’m not sitting around bummed out. I feel stupid grateful,” she shared. “But I’m still a romantic at heart. As for today, don’t waste the day being sad about what you don’t have! Be happy about what you do have. It’s there. I promise.”
Barrymore and her ex-husband split in August 2016, after four years of marriage.
“Will and I continue to marvel at what we made and try to be the best co parents we can be,” Barrymore wrote. “It’s not always easy and the point is…nothing in life is. But it doesn’t mean that any bitter outweighs the sweet!”
The longtime friends dated from 2007 to 2010 and also costarred in two romantic comedies together — the 2009 film He’s Just Not That Into You and 2010’s Going the Distance. Barrymore and Long have reportedly stayed friends throughout the years.
Barrymore has been open in the past about being friendly with her exes, telling PEOPLE in 2009 that her previous boyfriends “are really important to me, and I am very close with them.”
“Just because the ‘in love’ doesn’t work doesn’t mean the love goes away,” she said.
