Drew Barrymore is at a crossroads in her life following her split from Will Kopelman, but she’s found happiness in her own resilience.

“Just strength. Now that I’m a mom, and I know that it harkens back to the girls, aside from that, it really is ‘girl power,’ ‘badass,’ ” the actress told PEOPLE of what keeps her happy at her Mother’s Day Event hosted with Shutterfly and the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles at Estrella on Monday. “It is ‘strength,’ ‘clarity,’ ‘conviction,’ ‘health,’ ‘focus.’ ”

Barrymore and husband Will Kopelman announced their plans to divorce earlier this month. The couple share two children, Olive, 3, and Frankie, 2, and were married for almost four years.

“It’s funny, because there are times in my life that I am so loosey-goosey, so hedonistic, and it is so just ‘hippy-dippy,’ but right now I feel this great backbone is ‘One foot in front of the other,’ which is sort of my attitude right now,” she explained on Monday. “That is anything but loosey-goosey – that if you don’t stay in a straight line, you are going to get into trouble.”

Despite Barrymore’s recent breakup, a source previously told PEOPLE, the actress is still “optimistic for the future.”

“She’s a romantic at heart,” said the source, who is close to the actress. “Everyone who knows her knows that is who she is and who she’s always been, and that doesn’t change.”
