Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelmanare divorcing after nearly four years of marriage, and while their romance was unexpected (by their own accounts), the couple seemed to have finally found their happily ever after with each other.

The parents of two began dating in early 2011, cozying up after Barrymore’s on-again-off-again relationship with Justin Long finally ended.

“Sometimes whom you least expect is the person you fall for,” Kopelman said in 2014 of meeting the actress. “It was a combination of moments: watching her with my nephew. Traveling with her. Going to museums with her. I knew, adding them up, this was it.”

After a year of dating, the pair got engaged in January 2012 and walked down the aisle just a few months later.

“It was never really love at first sight,” Barrymore previously told InStyle. “Will struck a lot of my pragmatic sides. He was someone who was always reachable on the phone, someone who was a classy human being, someone who has this incredible blueprint of a family that I don’t have.”

Two daughters followed – first Olive, 3, and, later, Frankie, 23 months, finishing the “perfect and totally imperfect” family Barrymore always longed for.

After a atypical childhood characterized by stints in rehab and an absentee mother, Barrymore said she relished the normalcy of being a Kopelman.

“This is so safe and positive and healthy because they have their values intact,” Barrymore told Marie Claire of her new family in 2014. “It was huge for me. And that’s what I want for my family.”

They weren’t without problems though, as Barrymore told InStyle last fall, describing herself and Kopelman as “polar opposites.”

But the couple worked through it: “What I love about him is that he embodies the power of choice. He chooses to be a good person every day.”

Parenthood took the pair’s marriage to another level, and their focus shifted to raising Olive and Frankie, with Barrymore even considering stepping away from Hollywood.

Fatherhood looked good on Kopelman too, with Barrymore telling PEOPLE that she really likes “watching him be a father.”

“I know everyone says you’re supposed to put your coupledom first,” she shared. “But I really love it being all about the kids. Maybe that’s my compensating for not having parents myself or a childhood but right now, the focus is about how we’re figuring things out as parents.”
