The famous siblings have rented out an entire theater in the Texas town and are giving away tickets via social media to anyone who wants to attend the private screening with them and their band on Friday.
“So I had this idea last week,” Donny tells PEOPLE. “Marie and I are on our Christmas tour and we have a day off between traveling from Tulsa to Gainesville, so I thought what are the chances that we could get some private theater owner to let us do a screening?”
After securing a location, Donny had another idea: “I thought let’s do a social media campaign because so many people want tickets and they can’t get them.”
In addition to being huge fans of the franchise, the Osmonds have a special place in Star Wars history. The original characters from the 1977 film made their television debut on their show, Donny and Marie.
“Not many people know this, but in ’77 when Star Wars came out, George Lucas asked us to introduce these characters,” Donny says.
“We were there in the beginning!” Marie tells PEOPLE with a laugh. “Who knew that it would me so incredibly huge?”
While Donny says he remembers the characters were “impressive,” he admits he didn’t realize the movie would turn into such a phenomenon. “Little did I know, these characters that I’m singing and dancing next to were going to change the world,” he says.
To celebrate the new film, Donny has been releasing clips from the ’77 Star Wars special on his Instagram. “This one clip, I laugh every time I see it,” he says. “My brothers Allen and Jay are dressed up in the original stormtrooper costumes and they’re singing and dancing.”
Marie adds, “We’ve worked with amazing people over the years, from Frank Sinatra to Milton Berle to Bob Hope – but I’m very proud of standing next to C-3PO.”
