Christian Slater recently opened up about mending his relationship with his father, actor Michael Hawkins, after an estrangement that lasted for years.

The actor, 45, had a candid discussion with his Nymphomaniac director Lars von Trier in the June-July issue of Interview magazine, in which he said that he has recently reconciled with his dad, now 79, a “manic-depressive schizophrenic.”

“He’s always had trouble – he was a fantastic actor and extraordinarily charismatic and very, very good looking, but he had a really difficult time working with directors, collaborating with people,” Slater told the director, also noting that his mother was his father’s agent.

Slater, a dad of two, also said that he hadn’t spoken to the Amityville Horror actor in nearly a decade. But that recently changed, he explained, and his father is “in a place now, getting a lot of help from someone.”

Though he still hasn’t seen Hawkins in person in a few years, Slater said: “In the last few months my father actually reached out to me and wanted to reconcile and reconnect. I was very grateful to be able to communicate with him. From a tumultuous, back-and-forth relationship, we were able to begin to build a better bridge for the both of us. So that was good.”

Slater’s other father-son relationship is also blossoming. He said in the interview that his 16-year-old son, Jaden, is moving in with him and his wife, Brittany Lopez, 27. (The couple wed in December 2013.)

“But when I look around … I’m certainly happily married, I have a great relationship with my kids,” he said during the chat, adding that he’s “excited to get the opportunity to be a bit more of a father in his life.”

His two children – Slater also has a 13-year-old daughter, Eliana – are from his first marriage, to journalist Ryan Haddon, 44.

Next up for the actor is a psychological thriller series called Mr. Robot, in which he stars as the leader of an underground hacker group. The show premieres June 24 on USA.
