James Maslow and Chrissie Fit, who star as Flo in Pitch Perfect 2, teamed up to cover Jessie J’s “Flashlight,” which is featured in the movie (hitting theaters Friday) and was written by Sia and Sam Smith.

“We shot the video the morning after the premiere,” Fit, 31, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I was a zombie, but once James played the song for me, I had this newfound energy and was so ready to rock it.”

According to Maslow, 24, who rearranged the song and has been “playing around in the digital space for a little while now,” working with Chrissie was a no-brainer.

“She is an incredibly kind and talented girl, and putting together this cover was nothing but fun,” he says. “She has an amazing voice, which made it easy and fun to create a track, make the song our own, imagine a story line and then shoot our own music video.”

Shot at the YouTube space in Los Angeles, the duo “discovered the story of the video while we were filming,” says Fit. “We created these two characters: James, the supportive bartender at the venue where my character always sings, and me, the struggling musician. They realize throughout the song that they are each other’s flashlight.”

Filming the sequel to the hit movie was “the best time of my life,” says Fit. “I made friendships that I know will last. People are going to leave the movie theater feeling happy and wanting to sing all the way home.”
