Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan may have called it quits after eight years of marriage, but there are no hard feelings between the former couple.

“They honestly do still love each other and that’s not just for show,” a source tells PEOPLE.

Over time, the source says the pair started to lose their romantic spark.

“That love turned more into a friendship rather than the passion they felt when they first met and fell in love.”

The source adds that there was not a big fight or occasion that led to their decision to separate, rather Tatum and Dewan, both 37, simply drifted apart over time.

“That almost made it harder for them to decide to separate because there weren’t any huge issues, and there’s not one person to point a finger at as the one who screwed up,” says the source.

In the wake of their split, both Tatum and Dewan, who are parents to four-year-old daughter Everly, have been turning to friends for support.

“Channing has been spending more time with his friends over the last couple months and Jenna, of course, has her close group of girlfriends that she’s been leaning on,” says the source, adding, “They’ll always be connected.”

On Monday, the actors announced the split in a joint statement exclusive to PEOPLE, saying, “We have lovingly chosen to separate as a couple.” They added, “There are no secrets nor salacious events at the root of our decision — just two best-friends realizing it’s time to take some space and help each other live the most joyous, fulfilled lives as possible.”

The Magic Mike star has moved out of the Los Angeles family and a second source tells PEOPLE increased time apart eventually took a toll on their relationship.

“When Everly was younger, Channing and Jenna used to spend a lot of family time together,” says a second source. “For the past year, they seem to have spent less time together.”

Dewan and Tatum started dating shortly after they met on the set of their 2006 movie Step Up and tied the knot in 2009.
