Apollo Creed could be making a comeback.

It’s been three decades since Carl Weathers last appeared in a Rocky film, but if the right role comes along in the rumored sequel to Creed, he’s ready to get back in the ring.

“If I could get a role as cool at this point as Rocky’s was then yeah, in a heartbeat I’d be back in,” Weathers told reporters at the Los Angeles screening of Keifer Sutherland’s Forsaken.

Sylvester Stallone earned a Golden Globe and a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for reprising his Rocky character in Creed, and Weathers made it clear he would only consider rejoining the franchise if he was offered a similarly well-fleshed out role.

“It’s always is about the role. Just to say to be Apollo Creed again, I don t think that’s enough for any actor,” the actor, 68, said. “You want to see what the character’s about at this particular point.”

In Creed, Michael B. Jordan stars as Apollo’s son. And while fans of the franchise will remember Creed senior’s untimely death in Rocky IV, there’s still an opportunity for flashback sequences to flesh out Jordan’s character’s heritage.

Regardless of whether or not the opportunity to reprise the role presents itself, Weathers said he couldn’t be happier with his part in the franchise.

“God how could I not love that and what it’s brought to the table in terms of opportunity and a chance to play a role that’s pretty much an iconic role at this point,” he said.

“I love what Michael B. did though with it … and what [director] Ryan Coogler did with it, and what Sly did with his character.”
