He Still Likes Her! Burt Reynolds Says Sally Field Is 'The Love of My Life'
Burt Reynolds tells Vanity Fair he still has feelings for Sally Field and "misses her terribly"
He likes you! He really, really still likes you!
They were Hollywood’s most famous sweethearts before their bitter breakup in the ’80s, but the actor, now 79, says he continues to “miss her terribly.” He adds, “Even now, it’s hard on me. I don’t know why I was so stupid. Men are like that, you know. You find the perfect person, and then you do everything you can to screw it up.”
Reynolds, who in his heyday dated everyone from Adrienne Barbeau to Dinah Shore, says that when he enters into a relationship, he always gives women the same speech.
“It’s going to be awful sometimes, and I want to warn you,” he explains. “And they say, ‘Oh, no, you’re not. That’s not you.’ And I say, ‘It is me, and I don’t want to be that way. I hate that guy. But you’re going to see him, and I hope you don’t run away from me.’ And they haven’t.”
With a grin, Reynolds adds, “They always say, ‘I’ll be able to handle it.’ They can’t handle it. And they don’t understand what they’ve done. And it’s not them. It’s me.”
The Deliverance star also opens up about his financial struggles, which led him recently to list his Florida mansion for $4.9 million and auction off many of his personal possessions last December. “I trusted the wrong people with my money,” Reynolds explains.
While he also places blame on himself, when asked what the one thing was that cost him the most, Reynolds answers simply, “Women.” And when asked for his greatest regret, he says, “I would have spent more money and had a lot more fun,” adding, “It’s always possible to spend more money.”
Reynolds’ memoir, But Enough About Me, hits shelves Nov. 17.
