When it comes to having – and juggling – it all, Jurassic World star Bryce Dallas Howard says it’s all about the power of prayer.

“What keeps me sane the most is honestly the Serenity Prayer,” the actress tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. (Though the prayer is an Alcoholics Anonymous mainstay, she has never touched alcohol.)

“It is a powerful idea to have the wisdom to know the difference between what you can control and what you can’t. When I have that mantra in my head it helps me feel more balanced.”

Though work requires her to be on location for long periods of time – Jurassic World shot over six months in Hawaii and New Orleans – Howard enrolls her kids, Theo, 8, and Beatrice, 3, in local schools during production “so they get to meet a lot of new friends,” she says. “They love to travel.”

Howard, 34, also looks to her parents, Oscar-winning director Ron Howard, and Cheryl, both 61, as role models for keeping her children grounded in Hollywood. “They had some really great family policies that provided a lot of centering for us,” says the actress, who was raised in Connecticut with her three siblings. “They exposed us to my dad’s work and we were always given jobs on set but we weren’t going to parties or the red carpet.”

Married since 2006 to actor Seth Gabel, 33, whom she met in college at NYU, Howard says her husband is “unbelievably” supportive. “He’s on a TV show [WGN America’s Salem] seven months out of the year and he understands that I travel for work,” she adds. “Obviously we ideally wouldn’t be separated but he’s amazing.”

That’s where that prayer comes in handy as well. “I feel more balanced because sometimes there are things that you just can’t control and you just try and be graceful through that time,” says Howard, who was vocal about battling postpartum depression following the birth of her son. “And then there are times when you can control things and it’s about applying your wisdom and working toward a solution. I think that’s something I’m still consistently learning.”
