Bryan Cranston Spills 'Seinfeld' Secrets: Here's Why Jerry Is Always Smiling

Jerry Seinfeld‘s small-screen alter ego on Seinfeld had plenty to feel good about: He had a loyal (if eccentric) group of friends, a successful career (good enough to buy his parents a new Cadillac), and a dating life that would put even the most devoted Tinder users to shame.

But according to Bryan Cranston, who made several guest appearances on the hit sitcom as the joke-telling dentist Tim Whatley, there was another reason Seinfeld was always smiling.

“It was so much fun, we had to stop rolling the tape often because Jerry would be laughing,” Cranston, 60, revealed during the latest edition of The Jess Cagle Interview with PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly editorial director Jess Cagle.

“He was the one who cannot keep a straight face,” Cranston continued. “When you watch the show now, you’ll see him smiling constantly – that’s the best take they had of him not actually laughing, just smiling and trying to contain himself. It was a blast.”

Cranston appeared on five episodes of Seinfeld from 1994 through 1997.
