"Double wrist surgery....carpal tunnel in both! Relieved!" Brooke Shields wrote on her Instagram photo
Brooke Shields is on the mend after undergoing double wrist surgery for her painful carpal tunnel syndrome.
Shields, 50, took to Instagram on Monday to share the news of surgery with her 90,000 followers, posting a picture of a herself peeping through her bandaged wrists.
“Double wrist surgery….carpal tunnel in both! Relieved!” she wrote.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a medical condition that causes numbness and tingling in the hand and arm due to a pinched nerve in the wrist.
Shields posted a second photo of herself showing off her new arm accessories – though from the look on her face, she doesn’t seem too excited about them.
“Told to wear these double arm slings. Feels like a self love exercise!” she captioned the photo.
Shields has been suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome since before the birth of her fist child, Rowan, in 2003. She has always been open about her battle with the syndrome, writing about it in her 2005 biography Down Came the Rain, in which she also discussed her postpartum depression.
“I was still experiencing severe carpal tunnel syndrome, and my hands were unbelievably numb,” she wrote of a time when she was unable to change her daughters’ diapers due to the pain in her hands.
“I couldn’t manipulate Rowan’s harness or diaper effectively,” she continued. “[My husband] had to come to the rescue, and I labored back to bed, frustrated and in pain.”
