Judy Carne, the British actress who was best known as the “sock it to me” girl on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, died on Thursday. She was 76.

Though the cause of death is unknown, Carne had been in the hospital for several days battling pneumonia, according to the New York Times.

Before making a name for herself in the United States, the actress/comedian made her mark in England by making appearances in movies, television, and theater.

Though Carne made guest appearances on well-known television shows including Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Patty Duke Show and more, her role in Laugh-In was what got her the nickname “sock it to me,” a phrase that she would say before getting doused with water.

Carne, who was married to actor Burt Reynolds from 1963 to 1965, admitted that she had multiple affairs and battled a drug addiction in her autobiography “Laughing on the Outside, Crying on the Inside: The Bittersweet Saga of the Sock-It-To-Me Girl.”
