Just because he’s a crime boss doesn’t mean he’s not a dedicated father.

As James “Whitey” Bulger in the trailer for the gangster drama Black Mass, Johnny Depp offers his young son some words of wisdom.

“Hey buddy, I need you to listen very carefully to what I’m saying because there are lessons again and again throughout your whole life,” says Depp as Bulger. “You got to learn from these things, right?”

He adds: “It’s not what you do, it’s when and where you do it. And who you do it to or with.

“If nobody sees it, it didn’t happen,” he concludes.

“Jimmy, he’s six,” says Dakota Johnson‘s Lindsey Cyr. “You really think that’s the best thing to be telling your kid?”

Well, he’s only one of the most infamous crime bosses in the history of south Boston. What else would you expect?

Black Mass, which also stars Joel Edgerton and Benedict Cumberbatch. It will hit theaters Sept. 18.
