Andrew Garfield is taking on a new challenge.

In a PEOPLE exclusive clip of his new film Under the Silver Lake, Garfield, 35, plays Sam, a disenchanted man who becomes enthralled by Sarah, a woman he finds in his apartment’s swimming pool.

When she disappears, Sam finds himself on a journey across Los Angeles to decode the secret behind her disappearance. The experience leads him into the murkiest depths of mystery, scandal and conspiracy that he never could have imagined.

In the clip, Sam asks a friend, played by Topher Grace, to play a series of video games in order to detect a hidden code.

“Hey man, do you really think you’ll find a hidden message in a pop song?” Grace asks him.

“I don’t know,” Sam replies. “I just remember being in my room when I was, like, 10 and coming up with all these weird little codes and secret languages.”

The film, directed by It Follows‘ David Robert Mitchell, also stars Riley Keough, Grace Van Patten and Jimmi Simpson.

Under the Silver Lake is now playing in theaters and is available on VOD April 23.
