Amy Schumer on Her Father's Multiple Sclerosis: 'It's So Painful' to See Him Suffering
Amy Schumer also opens up about the shooting at a Trainwreck screening in a new interview with Barbara Walters
Amy Schumer is known for her comedic sensibilities, but the star also lives with everyday heartbreak – her father’s battle with multiple sclerosis.
The 34-year-old and recent PEOPLE cover girl told Barbara Walters that her dad, Gordon Schumer, is “not good” during her interview for ABC’s Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2015.
Schumer’s father resides in an assisted living facility and has been living with MS since the Emmy-winning actress was only 12.
“Some days he’s really good and he’s with it and we’re joking around,” Schumer told Walters, 86. “And some days I go to visit my dad and it’s so painful. I can’t believe it.”
The situation inspired part of the storyline in Schumer’s hit summer movie, Trainwreck. The actress’s onscreen character, also named Amy, has a father that lives in a similar facility and also suffers from MS.
“In terms of my dad being sick, it was just confusing to me, especially the way MS works,” Schumer explained. “He was in physical pain. That’s when I kind of took the lead and took care of everybody in my family. I would keep them – I would keep everybody laughing.”
has become more than just a reflection of her personal experiences, however. In July, a gunman opened fire during a screening of the movie in Lafayette, Louisiana, killing two and injuring at least nine. In the months since, Schumer has launched a crusade against gun violence in conjunction with New York Sen. Chuck Schumer (her cousin).
“Knowing it was my movie, I did feel some distant sense of responsibility,” she shared. “Did this animal seek out my movie? And from the way he felt about women, it sounds like he did.”
Schumer said that while the situation is scary, she won’t live her life in fear.
She said, “If I can help at all I’m gonna try, even if that means I’ll get hurt.”
Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2015 airs Thursday at 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
