Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender are known to be one of Hollywood’s most elusive couples, and they like to keep it that way.

Very rarely do the pair talk about their two-year romance but the actors opened up to Entertainment Weekly about their relationship off-screen as well as onscreen, playing husband and wife in their upcoming film The Light Between Two Oceans.

On falling in love on set, Fassbender said it wasn’t hard to separate fact from fiction.

“It wasn’t the first time in a movie either of us had played somebody who is falling in love. There is an element of separation there,” he said, adding, “If I’m playing a murderer, I don’t go out and start murdering people.”

Oscar-winning Vikander agreed. “I think we’ve made a clear statement that we keep certain things just between us. It was very easy to unite, but that’s quite personal,” she said.

Fassbender, 39, and Vikander, 27, first met while filming the Derek Cianfrance-directed movie in 2014. They made their awards-show debut as a couple at the Golden Globes in January

The German-Irish actor put it frankly: “I’m not going to talk about my private life with a total stranger, unless I feel like I need to. Why would I? I don’t.”

The Light Between Oceans hits theaters Sept. 2.
