Eddie Redmayne may be an Oscar-winning actor, but he credits Alicia Vikander for pushing him to take his performance to the next level in The Danish Girl.

“She’s a force of nature,” he said in an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from the film. “She’s just the most extraordinary talent. She has this deep, visceral relationship with her emotions. She challenged me to step up my game continuously.”

Vikander, 27, has received high accolades for her emotional portrayal of Gerda, wife of one of the first people to live openly as a transgender woman and to undergo sex-reassignment surgery, and the actress has scored an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Vikander said her fascination with the story of the couple made it easy for her to connect to her character.

“I was always just touched by the very, extremely, complex, difficult journey that they go on,” she said. “To be able to work so closely with Eddie and [director] Tom [Hopper] was quite extraordinary.”

The Danish Girl is available for digital download and arrives on Blu-ray/DVD March 1.

Vikander has been a front-runner in this year’s award season, taking home a Screen Actors Guild Award for her turn in Ex Machina. It is also widely predicted that the actress will go home with an Oscar for The Danish Girl on Sunday night.
