Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender started dating while starring as husband and wife in their new film, The Light Between Oceans. And though the couple have mostly kept their two-year romance out of the spotlight, new details have emerged about the early days of their relationship.

“It wasn’t hard for me to see that the chemistry could be there, just knowing them as individuals,” director Derek Cianfrance told Vanity Fair in its September issue, calling the couple a “undeniably good match.”

After watching them work together, Cianfrance said he wasn’t surprised that a romance sparked between Vikander, 27, and Fassbender, 39.

“What I saw was two great people who were so supportive of each other, who were really picking each other up, and pushing each other,” he explained. “Michael and Alicia, they were like Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. They were going to make one another better. And they were better together.”

And Fassbender agreed. The actor admitted that it didn’t take long for the couple to realize that their connection went beyond what was seen on screen. “These things of course sort of spill through to what you’re doing,” he said.

Vikander said she and Fassbender both helped one another feel comfortable on set. The Swedish actress confessed that while she initially felt “terrified and very alone” in the beginning of filming, it was Fassbender who wanted her help finding his footing.

“He was very sweet at letting me in,” she said of her boyfriend. “He was like, ‘Can you please give me a note? What do you think I should do?’ It was such a sweet thing to kind of let me in.”

Vikander and Fassbender made their awards-show debut as a couple at the Golden Globes in January, sitting next to each another and sharing a smooch before the Ex Machina star made her way to collect her best supporting actress trophy.

While their low-key status has caused their relationship to be plagued with breakup rumors over the years, the two have remained together – recently stepping out together on a hot date in New York City.

The Light Between Oceans hits theaters Sept. 2.
