The 18-year-old will star as the 21-year-old bomber

Former Nickelodeon star Alex Wolff, 18, will take on a more serious role with his supporting turn as the younger of the two Boston Marathon BombersDzhokhar Tsarnaev – in an upcoming film about the attacks, PEOPLE confirms.

The movie, Patriots Day, will also star Themo Melikidze, Mark Wahlberg, John Goodman and Kevin Bacon.

The film will follow the police as they investigate the devastating bombings. The 2013 attack killed 3 people and injured more than 250 others.

In April of 2015, Tsarnaev was convicted of 30 federal counts and sentenced to death two months later.

Tsarnaev’s brother and second bombing second, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was killed in a shootout with police following the incident.

Patriots Day will open in Boston, New York and Los Angeles on December 21.
