In November of that year, they took their romance public as Dauriac joined Johansson at the premiere of her film Hitchcock. 02 of 08 THEIR SECRET WEDDING Lionel Cironneau/AP On Oct. 1 2014, the couple quietly got married in Philipsburg, Montana, a clerk for Granite County confirmed to PEOPLE. Rumors that the stars had secretly tied the knot began when a report surfaced that the new parents quietly exchanged vows after welcoming their first child, daughter Rose Dorothy, in September. "They kept the wedding a big secret because they both wanted privacy," a source told the New York Post. 03 of 08 THE PERFECT MATCH Here, the couple glammed up for the Tom Ford Autumn/Winter 2015 Womenswear Collection Presentation at Milk Studios in Los Angeles. In a 2012 interview, Johansson told Elle, "For me, most importantly, I look for a partner who is creative. I like people that have a colorful way of looking at things, that are inspiring and like art, music and film." 04 of 08 FINDING THE RIGHT BALANCE In a 2014 interview with WSJ Magazine, Johansson explained her philosophy on balancing work and family. "There must exist a world in which I can balance those things, be able to raise a family and still make a film a year, or work on my own, develop things, do theater. I want to be able to have it all," she said. 05 of 08 KEEPING A LOW PROFILE Johansson and Dauriac were notoriously private for a Hollywood couple, but they occasionally attended events together, like the opening of their new gourmet popcorn store "Yummy Pop" on Oct. 22, 2016, in Paris. 06 of 08 LIFE TOGETHER Splash News On a 2015 episode of The Late Show, Johansson talked about living with Dauriac in Paris, while also spending time in New York. "There's not a day that goes by that I don't walk down the street and go, 'Wow, this is such an incredibly beautiful place,'" Johansson said of the City of Lights. Johansson also revealed she'd been learning French, her husband's language, although she prefered to speak in English during fights. "When you're in a relationship with somebody you want to speak whatever language is easiest to get your ideas out as quickly as possible, so you can argue your point," she explained. 07 of 08 THE SPLIT Gilbert Carrasquillo/FilmMagic In March 2017, Johansson officially filed for divorce from Dauriac; the couple had split in January. In the divorce papers, Johansson asked for primary physical custody of their 2-year-old daughter. “They’ve been separated since the summer,” a source confirmed to PEOPLE in late January, adding that it was Johansson who initiated the split. 08 of 08 MOVING FORWARD After the divorce news went public, Johansson released a statement. “As a devoted mother and private person and with complete awareness that my daughter will one day be old enough to read the news about herself, I would only like to say that I will never, ever be commenting on the dissolution of my marriage,” she said. “Out of respect for my desires as a parent and out of respect for all working moms, it is with kindness that I ask other parties involved and the media to do the same.” Her estranged husband, meanwhile, urged Johansson to withdraw her filing. “It is indeed unfortunate, especially for our daughter, that Scarlett filed in Court and made our personal differences so public. I would implore her to withdraw her action promptly and go back, as uncomfortable as it might be, to the negotiating table. We are the parents of a lovely daughter whom we will continue to co-parent for many years and share her joys and sorrows as only a parent can.” His lawyer Hal Mayerson claimed that the two had been negotiating privately, and that Dauriac was "shocked" when Johansson filed in court and asked for residential custody of their daughter. “He plans to petition the court to allow him and his daughter to move to France,” Mayerson said. “He believes that her schedule makes it impossible for her to have [primary] physical custody.”
