Armie Hammer has been a star on the rise for a while.
The 31-year-old actor first burst onto the scene playing the Winklevoss twins in 2010’s The Social Network. Lead roles in The Lone Ranger and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. soon followed, but it’s his role in the upcoming drama Call Me By Your Name that has audiences swooning. Since debuting at the Sundance Film Festival in January, the film has been pegged as a surefire Oscar contender.
Before those potential nominations arrive, catch up on 5 things you need to know about the actor.
1. He comes from a very wealthy background
Hammer (who’s full name is Armand Douglas Hammer) is the great-grandson of the Russian-Jewish oil tycoon Armand Hammer. His family name is plastered on landmarks all across the Los Angeles area but he maintains that despite his wealthy upbringing, he wasn’t out of touch with reality growing up.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hammer detailed the self-awareness that he had while growing up: “I definitely wasn’t like, ‘This is how everyone grows up.’ We got to live in amazing places. We had great things…we would drive around in really nice cars — but at the same time, if we rolled down the window, my mom would be like, ‘You’re wasting air conditioning!'”
2. He is self-conscious of his dancing
In Call Me By Your Name Hammer was forced to step out of his comfort zone in more ways than one, but one scene in particular caused him to cringe: a solo dance scene. In a now viral video from the film, Hammer danced like no one was watching and busted out some adorably awkward dance moves.
Hammer self-deprecatingly described his dancing style to Vulture saying, “When I dance I think, you’re really shit at this, and everyone around you knows it because you’re the tallest guy on the dance floor and you stick out like a sore thumb.”
3. He’s a huge Titanic fan
Hammer spent a great part of his childhood in the Cayman Islands in a household where television was forbidden but he was allowed to go to the local movie theater. That’s where he found his love of movies, specifically Titanic.
“When Titanic came out, they put it on both screens for months,” Hammer recalled to The Hollywood Reporter. “I probably saw it six or seven times.”
4. He’s “in love” with his Call Me By Your Name director
Hammer spoke to Vulture about the intense experience he had while filming Call Me By Your Name and described the special relationship he had with the film’s director Luca Guadagnino. “Honestly, I think I had fallen in love with Luca,” Hammer confessed.
Guadadnino echoed a similar sentiment saying that is the kind of bond he tries to form while making movies. “For me to make a movie, it’s really creating a family,” he said. “Having a very profound familial bond with the people I’m doing the movies with, where you literally and constantly fall in love with all of them. Sometimes, this emotional flow can be very intense. Very! As it was with Armie. And then it can be very complicated.”
5. He and his wife were friends for three years before getting together
Hammer and his wife Elizabeth Chambers were first introduced by their mutual friend Tyler Ramsey but did not jump into a romantic relationship right away. Chambers already had a boyfriend and Hammer told THR that he found the three year period of friendship to be “incredibly liberating.”
The actor elaborated further on their relationship’s beginnings and how it eventually ended up transitioning into something more. “It was like, ‘I don’t have to impress you. I’m going to tell you everything. I’m going to tell you if I slept with somebody,” he said. “If I took drugs.’ We became closer, until one day I said, ‘You have to break up with your boyfriend so we can start dating.”
Call Me By Your Name opens in select theaters Friday.
