Episode 7 of AMERICAN DOERS, a new 12-part video series featuring original thinkers, innovators, craftspeople, risk-takers and artisans across the United States.

Katie Gong‘s passion for woodwork has led to a fulfilling career with her own company, Katie Gong Designs, which features furniture pieces and installations.

“My grandfather was a carpenter, he made all kinds of furniture for his house,” she says. “And my father was also a carpenter, so growing up I was cheap labor.”

“We laid tile in our kitchen, we changed the countertops, we put up walls, teared down walls — anything you can think of,” she continues. “I wanted to learn everything, I want to take it apart and put it back together. I want to see how it works, and i’ve always been that way, ever since I was a kid.

“I was meant to be doing this. I couldn’t picture my life any other way.”
