Castle star Nathan Fillion might be the one actor with the most superhero cred but without a starring superhero role to his name.

In addition to his heroics on Firefly, he played Captain Hammer in Joss Whedon’s online miniseries Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, he’s voiced the Green Lantern in four separate direct-to-video animated films, and his voice even made a cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy.

However, Fillion has yet to actually star in a major comic book film. This past weekend, at a Q&A at Chicago’s Wizard World Comic Con, one fan asked him what superheroes he’d most like to portray, and he had a few answers ready. Most notable among them? The super-powered schoolteacher character that William Katt portrayed on the early ’80s TV series The Greatest American Hero.

“I think Greatest American Hero is due for a reboot,” Fillion mentioned, eliciting applause from the audience.

He might be joking, but then again, Fillion seems to have given the matter a lot of thought. He cites two other potential heroes he thinks would be a good fit for him, and they’re not characters the casual superhero fan would know: Booster Gold, a flashy, time-traveling DC hero known for having a good sense of humor – “I think I could take a pretty good crack at Booster Gold. That s kind of my niche. Show-offy, vain not too bright” – and Ambush Bug, a bizarre, mentally ill character beloved by only the most dedicated of comic book fans.

At the panel, Fillion was joined by his Firefly costars Summer Glau and Adam Baldwin, whose choice superheroes were She-Ra and Green Lantern, respectively.
