Episode 10 of AMERICAN DOERS, a new 12-part video series featuring original thinkers, innovators, craftspeople, risk-takers and artisans across the United States.
Chad Palmatier and Anthony Sobotik discovered their mutual love of ice cream after meeting at a singles mixer in N.Y.C. in 2005.
A few months after they started dating, Palmatier, 43, introduced his then-new boyfriend Sobotik, 35, to his family in Lancaster, Pa., — and the first thing they all did was head to their favorite ice cream corner shop to celebrate.
A few years later, they were inspired to start their own artisanal ice cream shop during a visit to see Sobotik’s family in Austin, Texas.
But they quickly learned that working with your partner isn’t always so sweet.
“The first year was so stressful,” Palmatier says. “We had never spent this much time together — creating something together is all-consuming.
“We’ve encountered every obstacle — both personally and professionally‚ and we’ve made it through. And it has made us stronger as a couple.”

The pair has learned that they need to balance work with focusing on their relationship.
“It’s difficult to not talk about work all the time. But you have to just make yourself disconnect and talk about House of Cards or The Crown or something!” Sobotik says.
Adds Palmatier, “One of the things that keeps us bonded is the fact that we know what’s important. The business is great, but if we’re together, that’s what’s important. Nothing will get in the way of that.”
