Grieving Husband Recovers Music from Wife Who Died During Childbirth Thanks to Internet Strangers
Jared Buhanan-Decker's wife Sharry died during childbirth, and he turned to Reddit for help recovering some lost music that she'd recorded.
Jared Buhanan-Decker’s wife Sharry died giving birth to their first child, James.
Over the summer, Jared found some recordings his wife had made of herself playing guitar and singing. Though she was open and passionate about her love for music, she’d only posted a few videos to YouTube, but the new recordings Jared found weren’t in a format he recognized.
So he took to Reddit, asking for help with the files. “I just want to be able to hear her voice again,” he wrote. Within a few short hours, fellow Redactors had converted the files and shared them with Jared.
“People can be very kind in the face of tragedy,” Jared said.
Jared continues to update the blog that Sharry started, with updates on James’ (JJ) progress. Doctors think that Sharry may have died from an amniotic fluid embolism, and the resulting trauma to JJ during the emergency C-section might have various medical complications going forward.
“At first JJ’s ‘worst case scenarios’ included blindness, never walking, never feeding himself, cerebral palsy, severe learning disabilities and [overall] short life,” Jared told HuffPost.
But the 4-month-old is recovering better than expected, and Jared continues to share updates about his health, as well as memories and anecdotes from Sharry’s life. A recent blog post contained her bucket list, which he plans to complete with JJ.
“She really sincerely and intensely cared about things. She longed to make a difference in the world for the better,” Jared said. “She was passionate and emotional for good and for bad, and I miss her more than I could ever imagine.”
