Austin Couple Is Obsessed with Making Ice Cream You Can Feel Good About Eating

"We use only the best ingredients we possibly can," Chad Palmatier says

Meet Chad Palmatier and Anthony Sobotik. Together they run Lick Honest Ice Creams. But what does it mean for ice cream to be honest?

In 2010, the couple sold their home in Ohio, moved to Austin, Texas, and opened Lick Honest Ice Creams with a mandate to use only wholesome ingredients from local farmers.

“We want to support our local dairies and farmers,” Sobotik says. “That’s really important to us.”

With Sobotik dreaming up inventive flavors (Cilantro Lime, Texas Sheet Cake and Dewberry Corn Cobler), they’ve created a product you can feel good about eating.

“All of our produce and all of the chocolate, goat cheese, honey and olive oil we use comes from local farmers and artisans,” Sobotik adds. “We’re trying to work as much with the small farmers as we can. It’s a win-win.

Palmatier adds, “It’s our whole mission — just keeping everything super local.”

And it all comes back to the simple joy of ice cream.

“We know how happy ice cream makes people because it makes us happy as well,” Sobotik says. “And then getting to work with all these farmers and artisans, we have a great group that we work with.

“We get to make a product that gives joy to people.”
