EXCLUSIVE: Shay Mitchell Shows Off her Glam Guesthouse
A Pretty Little Makeover
Shay Mitchell is a woman with vision. And in her tiny Los Angeles guesthouse, her interior-design dreams were not matching reality. "I wanted a glam room, a place to hold meetings, a lounge area to watch TV and a private office," says the actress, 29. "And the space was none of that." She teamed up with Mat Sanders of Consort Design to make over the rooms with classic, feminine style.
Black and White All Over
Cool black-and-white accents are a signature of the space. The standout platform bed, which Sanders invented to hide an architectural quirk, is covered in Clé tiles. "All the details in the house are pretty subtle so the tile really added that dramatic touch, says the Pretty Little Liars star. " I knew it would be something that I loved!"
The sophisticated living space was designed to be functional for work and play. "I wanted it to be a place where I could have a comfortable sitting area to entertain friends that could also double as a place to film YouTube [videos]," she says. "That was really important."
Shay's custom glam station was inspired by one belonging to another Sanders client, Jessica Alba. Shay saw the decked-out space at Alba's Honest Company headquarters and requested the same. "I think she went to visit Jess one day and she was like, 'Um, I need this. I want this,'" says Sanders. The requirements for such a space? Now it's one of Shay's favorite spots where, she says, "I get ready for any event. [It's] much better than at the dining room table!"
Movie Star Quality
Sanders chose the gold sconces framing a multifunctional space to be "the jewlery in the room." Black accents lend a fashion-forward touch.
Inspiration is Everywhere
"It's a perfect reflection of me," Shay says of her stylish 'after.' "I love to get glammed up with my team for a big event but I also love to spend the night in cozy at home." And no wonder, the inspiration comes directly from her travels and love for style. "It's really fashion-cool," says Sanders of her aesthetic. "She's really feminine but she likes to inject a little bit of edge into the interior so we played a lot with black and white."
All In the Details
And it's no wonder. The inspiration comes directly from her travels and love for fashion. "I would say its Moroccan meets Mediterranean with a touch of glam," she says of the style. "Mat picked pieces large furniture pieces that were glam and also the finishing touches pulled in the Mediterranean feel; from the mirror and lighting fixtures to the little details in the pillows.
The Girl Boss Zone
The guest room pulls double duty as Shay's office. "She wanted there to be a beautiful office setting that she could stage all the different lifestyle videos that she does on YouTube," says Sanders. "It was really her girl loft moment." The clear waterfall desk and furnishings throughout were provided by Wayfair.
What a Girl Wants
A fresh, white kitchenette completes the space, and means Shay and her guests never really has to leave her new favorite hang spot. "I love the space," she gushes. "I actually find myself spending more time in it now."
