When Property Brothers star Drew Scott and his fiancée Linda Phan started shopping for homes in Los Angeles, they had one rule: buy the worst house they could find.

“We ruled out any that had been updated,” Drew, 39, tells HGTV Magazine in their latest issue (and first to feature the networks’ stars on its cover). When they came across a charming-on-the-outside 97-year-old build, he says they knew right away it was “the one.”

The dated interior needed a ton of updating — which is exactly what the couple was looking for. With help from Drew’s twin brother and HGTV costar, contractor Jonathan, they tackled every imaginable decor faux-pas, from “shag carpet no one even wanted to touch,” to poodle wallpaper, says Drew.

“‘Don’t harm the charm’ was our motto,” adds Linda, 32, who works as the Creative Director of Scott Brothers Entertainment. In fact they paid homage to elements they nixed, including colored tiles (now in their bright-green guest bath) and patterned wallpaper, which has made a major comeback among design savants. “Linda would have put wallpaper on practically every wall!” says Drew.

The trio renovated every square inch of the 5-bedroom, 4-bath home on their show Property Brothers at Home: Drew’s Honeymoon House, to create what they call their forever home.Says Drew, “It feels like we’re on a honeymoon staycation—and the wedding hasn’t even happened yet!”
