Ah, the quintessential stain of summer: mean, green and notoriously difficult to clean.
If you’ve ever done a desperate Google search while battling a particularly nasty grass stain, you know there is an overwhelming array of hacks and DIYS to be found on the internet. And professional cleaner Jill Nystul has tested them all.
“It takes a lot to surprise me anymore,” says the experienced home-hack blogger, “especially when it comes to homemade laundry solutions. But this one definitely did just that.” The mix that made her a believer? A simple cocktail of store-bought detergent and common kitchen staples brewed by one of her savvy commenters.
She mixed up a batch of the brew, sprayed it on the grass-splattered khakis of her teenage son (the ultimate test!), gave them a little rub and tossed them in the washer. “After one wash it completely removed the stains,” says Nystul. “I didn’t even soak them. I can’t wait to try it out on more stains!” Spoken like a woman who lives for a real-deal laundry hack.

WHAT YOU NEED
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup ammonia
- 1 cup vinegar
- 1 cup Era laundry detergent
Mix all the ingredients in a pitcher and then pour it into a spray bottle. Spray the clothing item liberally with the mixture and rub the areas with the worst stains together. Wait about 10 minutes and then throw them in the laundry machine with a regular load.
