String lights aren’t just dorm decor anymore!

Fairy lights, holiday lights and the like have long been relegated to Christmas trees and kids’ rooms, but there are a ton of sophisticated ways to decorate with the simple (and cheap!) staple. Here, three of our favorite hacks for using string lights with style.

1. Make a luminary.

All you need for this 5-minute decorating idea is a string of battery-powered fairy lights and an empty wine bottle. Use a colored glass bottle for a moodier light, or clear for a bright, festive look.

2. Line the dinner table.

No need to spend a ton of cash on expensive floral centerpieces for your next gathering. A string of large frosted bulbs laid down the center of a rectangular table adds instant ambience. During the holidays, use retro colored bulbs.

3. Set a dining area aglow.

If you don’t have an outdoor dining area, or it’s just not the season for eating al fresco, capture a bit of that laid-back backyard dinner party vibe by stringing a set of exposed filament bulbs across your dining room to create an intimate canopy.
